Tai Chi.. For a Healthy Body and Mind

This week here at 4 Life Exercise Physiology we are starting our very own Tai Chi for Arthritis and Wellness classes!

Why Tai Chi?

Well, this gentle form of exercise has been proven to improve health of the body and mind.

Originating in ancient China, Tai Chi is a form of martial art. Our classes teach a modified form of Sun style Tai Chi. They include safe, gentle and easy to learn movements which may be done sitting or standing. The degree of exertion of the slow movements may be easily adjusted, enabling people of all ages and abilities to participate.

Benefits of Tai Chi include:

  • Increased mobility and reduced stiffness
  • Improved balance and falls prevention
  • Heightened sense of wellbeing and stress management
  • Improved ability to complete daily activities
  • Increased muscle strength and joint flexibility
  • Social interaction, enjoyment and mental health benefits

Muscle strength is important to support and protect our joints, and is essential for normal physical function. Flexibility exercises allow freedom of movement, prevent stiffness and allow healing through increased circulation. Tai Chi helps to build lean muscle mass, while gently freeing up stiff joints and muscles.

The program is evidence-based and proven to relieve pain, maintain and improve quality of life in people with arthritis. Research has shown that with 12 weeks of Tai Chi practice, participants had 35% less pain, 29% less stiffness and 29% more ability to perform daily tasks, as well as improved balance, compared to those who did not participate.

It is social, fun and rewarding, so come along and join in!
